Imagine there was a disease that killed over 100,000 people a year, yet most people promoted it, instead of trying to eradicate it.
Handguns and easy access to guns (that are far more powerful than previously available) cause great trouble. Yet some seek to remove all control over them. We require people to go to school and get a license to drive, but allow guns to be bought and sold far more easily.
We should always allow people freedom within their own homes, but what if that means allowing them to easily endanger or take the lives of those nearby? It shouldn't be allowed -- except for defensive weapons for the home -- whether the possible offender is a civilian criminal or a government worker.
One could argue that allowing bad guys to kill each other off is a good thing. But imagine the situation if harmful weapons were not around: safer streets, safer homes and families. What if every knife were a safety knife, and every gun merely a stun-gun or a mere prop.
Think the opposite way -- what if we allowed anyone to buy rocket-launchers or grenades at their neighborhood convenience store? Or a future weapon like a laser-blaster or mortars that could level whole blocks: well, it would be small arms - but terribly evil. We'd have really bad things happening. We should allow people to have nuclear weapons at home? Where is the limit to destruction we must allow? How about less ability to harm?
We have national safety when every civilian is in a position to defend themself. So, we do not want to eliminate defensive weaponry. How about tear-gas, stun-guns, water-cannons and such in homes? Perhaps that would be a better tradition to uphold. Better yet, if all nations work together to create a global peace force, we will have less to worry about.
Because people insist on the right to arm themselves, let them use the old style available when the laws were written: muskets, or swords, or clubs! Everyone has the right to a bear a club. And everyone has a right to bare arms!!
